Jerry and Amy Smith
We are a husband and wife team that discovered the Finger Lakes on our honeymoon in 2012. This started a journey into the region's bounty, and wine in general, that is still going strong 8+ years on.
Jerry - I've had careers in newspapers, the US Navy (electrical operator on submarines), as a veterinarian, and most recently as a student of wine. I have certificates from UCDavis in winemaking, and from Sonoma State in Wine Business Management. I have completed level 3 of the WSET program and am currently a diploma student. I need new stuff to keep me from getting bored and, luckily, when I stumbled into wine I found a subject that can never be completely mastered, even with a lifetime of work and study. It's both frustrating and extremely cool. History, religion, biology, chemistry, biochem, microbiology, farming, geology, archaeology, etc. etc. etc. Wine touches on nearly every aspect of human study and endeavor. As I said, very cool. Let's see where this goes, together.
The Finger Lakes - We love this region, and the people that live and work here. The marginal climate for grape growing ensures vintage variation. The unpredictable weather means that only the producers who are the most meticulous in the vineyard, and are willing to make hard sacrifices in yield in some years, produce excellent wine consistently. Our purpose here is to highlight these producers, as well as people working in wine (and food, but mostly wine) at all levels. The plan is to provide a platform that gives voice to people who care deeply about their region and what the land produces.
